PLUMBING

Water Bill Suddenly Higher in Malta? Check for a Hidden Leak

An unexpectedly high water bill may reflect consumption changes, a running cistern or a hidden supply leak. Use a structured comparison before repairing pipework.

Property information can change by product, building and scheme. For grants, finance and regulated work, verify current official terms before making a decision.

Verify the billing period

Compare meter readings, bill dates, occupancy and any unusual irrigation or tank top-up activity. If possible, photograph the current meter reading and compare it against the last actual reading, not just the total amount due. Some bills may include estimated periods or adjustments; clarify these with the supplier.

Non-invasive household checks

Listen for running toilet cisterns and look for dripping taps or tank overflows. If all water users can safely stop consumption, observe whether the meter continues to register flow. The Water Services Corporation publishes household leak-check guidance, including meter and roof-tank checks. Never operate unfamiliar valves or access an unsafe roof.

Isolating a hidden fault

If the meter appears to move when no water is intentionally used, ask a plumber to identify whether the suspected loss is on the incoming supply, downstream of the roof tank, or within a particular fixture. Record dates, photographs and repair documentation. Do not start breaking floors or walls before the fault is located as far as practicable.

After the repair

Compare later meter readings under similar usage, check the repaired area for moisture, and retain the plumber's report and paid invoice. Ask the supplier about applicable leak-reporting or rebate procedures rather than assuming a rebate is guaranteed.
