Geyser Leaking or Not Heating in Malta: Safe Troubleshooting

A geyser may fail to heat, release water through a safety outlet or leak from a connection. Distinguish the symptom before assuming the whole unit needs replacing.

Property information can change by product, building and scheme. For grants, finance and regulated work, verify current official terms before making a decision.

A geyser may fail to heat, release water through a safety outlet or leak from a connection. Distinguish the symptom before assuming the whole unit needs replacing.

Safety first

Do not touch wet electrical switches, covers or wiring. If water is near electrics, stay clear and contact qualified help. A geyser can contain hot pressurised water; do not cap its safety discharge, bypass thermostats or remove a pressure-relief valve. If there is a suspected electrical fault, stop using the appliance until inspected.

Describe the symptom precisely

Check whether there is no hot water, insufficient hot water, intermittent heating, water from a threaded joint, or discharge from a relief line. Note the unit size, age, make and installation location; take photos of labels without removing covers. A small drip at an exposed fitting differs from corrosion or leakage through the tank body.

What a service visit should include

The plumber and electrician, as appropriate, should inspect connections, pressure conditions, temperature control, safety devices, earthing and circuit protection. Ask whether the fault is serviceable or requires replacement. Where a replacement is proposed, confirm dimensions, capacity, expected heat-up time, access and disposal of the old unit.

What to put on the quote

Specify supply or labour only, electrical works, valves, pipework modifications, mounting, isolation, commissioning and warranty. Request a final demonstration: no unexpected leaks, hot-water delivery at fixtures, and safety components left unobstructed. Do not make claims about energy savings without comparing the actual unit ratings and usage.
