PAINTING AND PLASTERING
Paint Peeling and Damp Plaster in Malta: Diagnose Before Repainting
Flaking paint and soft plaster often return when moisture, salt or surface preparation is ignored. Work backwards from the defect before selecting a finish.

Identify where it happens
Map affected patches: ceiling, external wall, lower wall, bathroom or around an aperture. Note recent rain, plumbing incidents, condensation and salt-like deposits. Photograph the area before cleaning. Do not assume every white powdery mark is mould; soluble salts and efflorescence require different treatment.
Check for unresolved water
A roof or façade leak needs repair before decorative finishing. Condensation requires ventilation and moisture-management changes. A dry-looking surface can still hold moisture; moisture testing and a realistic drying period may be necessary. If there are persistent damp marks, have the source assessed before approving extensive plaster removal.
Specify preparation rather than 'two coats'
Ask the painter to describe loose-material removal, cleaning, repairs, primer compatibility, filler or plaster type, drying time, number of coats and protection of floors and furniture. In salt-affected areas, a generic interior paint system may fail quickly; choose compatible materials after diagnosis and follow the manufacturer's current data sheets.
Accepting the finished job
Check uniform coverage in natural light, edges, masking, repaired areas, and whether any damp source remains unresolved. Record the product names and batch details if warranty depends on a system. A workmanship warranty should explain what is excluded when the underlying moisture source is outside the contracted scope.
